【STUDY|Materials】 Antistatic High-performance plastic sheets (acrylic, part 2)

Static electricity is a problem that plagues the electrical and electronics fields.
plastic materials also generate static electricity, so it is one of the most common problems in plastic processing that when you touch an acrylic sheet in the wintertime, you feel a painful sensation of static electricity.
There are antistatic and antistatic acrylic sheets designed to solve this problem.
1. characteristics and properties
The name of the plastic is indicated on the drawing as antistatic or antistatic, but the meaning is basically the same.
In the past, there were acrylics with an antistatic agent kneaded into them, but nowadays surface coating is the mainstream.
The figure below is a diagram.
*Quotes from Sekisui Chemical HP (Eslon DC Plate)
I thought that the transparency would be lower because of the coating. However, in fact, the transparency is almost the same as that of ordinary transparent acrylic (87% transmittance).
In addition, the surface resistivity is 106 to 108 Ω/sq, so it is difficult for dust and dirt to adhere to the surface.
The coating is less affected by ultraviolet rays and has high durability, so it can be used outdoors.
2. Uses
To prevent static electricity, it is widely used in the electronics and electrical fields.
Covers for displays, panels, and mechanical equipment
Covers for electronic equipment
Various kinds of transport trays and boxes
Semiconductor manufacturing equipment covers
Clean room windows
Clean room windows, etc.
3. Processing
Cutting processing is no different from that of ordinary acrylic sheets.
However, adhesion is not suitable due to the surface coating.
When making boxes, etc., it is better to screw it down by threading or heliserting.
Bending is possible since the coding does not weaken.
The model numbers of antistatic and antistatic acrylic by each manufacturer are different.
The antistatic acrylic we use is mainly Sekisui Chemical’s Eslon DC Plate AC405A.
Summary
Each manufacturer has materials that are strong in this performance field.
When preventing static electricity, there is a method of spraying an antistatic agent (spray type) called COLCOAT on a regular board material, but for something stronger, antistatic/anti-static acrylics with a surface coating are better.
Other antistatic/antistatic materials include polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, and PET.
In terms of price, acrylic is the most expensive antistatic after polycarbonate, and in recent years, the use of PVC has become less common due to restrictions on the use of certain hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment such as RoHS and JUMP.
