EXAMPLE

【STUDY|Materials】 About the drawing notation of color abbreviations, color numbers, etc.

Plate and round bar resins are manufactured by mixing coloring agents and additives into the resin.
The coloring agents and additives add color to the plastic, and there are many color designations on the drawings.
There are different types of color indications that are often seen on drawings.

1. color abbreviation

In drawings, colors are indicated by abbreviations.
For example, white and black are commonly used colors for POM, and cream and black, called natural colors, for ABS.

Examples
White: Material name-W
Black: Material name-B
Natural (cream color): Material name-N

In this way, the color abbreviation is added after the material name or model number. 2.

2. color number

For materials that come in many different colors, check them by using a number called a color number.
For example, acrylics come in more than 100 different colors and have a variety of material characteristics in addition to color.
Each manufacturer has a different model number and color number, and even colors with the same name may have slightly different shades.

Examples
-Shinko Light (former Mitsubishi Rayon), manufactured by Shinko Light (former Acrylite)
Colorless transparent: 001
Bone white: 402
Black: 502

-Kuraray’s ParaGlass
Clear and colorless: P
White bone: M
Black: 502K

As shown above, color numbers and names change depending on each manufacturer.

3. Japanese

If you do not know the color number or color abbreviation, or if you want to simplify the process, you can use the Japanese notation method.

Examples
POM (white)
Bake (black)
Colorless transparent acrylic

In this way, the material name can be followed by parentheses to designate the color, or the color and material can be described as they are.

Conclusion.

In some cases, the color description of a material is not written in all cases (sometimes only the name and model number are written), but if the model number is the same and only the color is different, then the color description should be included.
In the case of printing, there are color samples called “pantone” and “dic.
However, in the case of cutting, even in plastic processing, color swatches are rarely used because of the limited number of colors available for plates and round bars.
When printing on machine covers or films, we use pantone or dic color swatches and check the samples against the color swatches.
Incidentally, dic color swatches are also available on a smartphone app.
This is very useful if there are no color samples available at the time of the meeting.
Search for “color guide” and you will find it, so why don’t you check it?
