【STUDY|Material】POM?Duracon? Delrin? Polyacetal? Material Names for Drawings to Avoid Confusion

Why different designations for the same material?
There are situations where people refer to materials in different ways, and you need to confirm that the same material can really be used for processing.
When looking at the actual drawings, while looking at the machined shape and dimensional tolerances, the material description is the first thing to check immediately.
I look at the drawings while thinking, “If this shape can be machined with this material, it can be machined.
<!–more–><br />
The same concept applies to estimating, but one situation where I am also confused is when the material entry is for POM, Duracon, Delrin, or polyacetal.
Difference between name and abbreviation
In fact, POM is probably the most common material listed on drawings these days.
POM is an abbreviation, and its official name is polyacetal polyoxymethylene.
Its name is also polyacetal.
POM is a simplified version of the overly long formal name.
The official name: Polyacetal Polyoxymethylene
Name: Polyacetal
Abbreviation: POM
POM can be divided into copolymer and homopolymer,
Copolymer: Good thermal stability and chemical resistance
Homopolymer: Excellent flexibility
Basically, POM can be considered as a single material without considering it in detail.
Difference between Duracon and Delrin?
Manufacturers that produce POM include Polypenco and Toray Plastics Seiko, but the manufacturers that have been making POM for a long time are Polyplastics and DuPont.
The trade names of the polyacetal products manufactured by these two companies are called Duracon and Delrin.
Polyplastics: Duracon
DuPont: Delrin
As a supplement, many old drawings are listed as Duracon instead of POM.
summary
Since different manufacturers produce different types of products, even if the designations are indicated on the drawings, if the designations are specified by the manufacturer, we will obtain confirmation before processing and selecting the material.
If polyacetal or POM is indicated on the drawing, we will use the appropriate POM material based on price, processing, and usage conditions.
There are also different colors of the same material, and the color indications are also different.
