【STUDY|Materials】A Surprisingly Light Mirror⁉Acrylic also has a mirror! (Acrylic Part4)

Do you think that mirrors are only made of glass or metal?
In fact, there are mirrors made of plastic acrylic.
You may think you have never seen one before, but acrylic mirrors are also used in places where we live in everyday life.

Features and Characteristics

Acrylic mirror is a mirror board made of acrylic with aluminum vapor deposition.
Since it is a mirror, it is lighter than glass.
The specific gravity of glass is about 2.5, while that of acrylic mirror is about 1.2, so the weight is about half.
Another feature is that it is hard to break even if dropped.
Glass shatters when broken, but acrylic mirrors do not shatter, reducing the danger of shattering.
It is also available in a variety of colors. Generally, the color is silver, but black, gold, and various other colors are also available upon special order.
Since it is aluminum vapor deposited, both sides can be mirrored.
Since it is acrylic, there is a disadvantage that the surface is easily scratched, but there are mirrors with high surface hardness and excellent scratch resistance by hard coat treatment.
Another disadvantage is that it is softer than glass, so the larger the surface area, the more distortion will occur.

2. Uses

Used as a substitute for glass, both indoors and outdoors.
Reflective panels
Store decoration
Aircraft mirrors
Automobile interior mirrors
ATM crime prevention mirrors
IT, AV, and mobile terminals
IT, AV, mobile terminals, etc.

3. model number

Model numbers of antistatic acrylics differ among manufacturers.

Ryoko
Acrymirror M (cast sheet)
Acrymirror MS (extruded sheet)
Acrymirror MR (surface hardening)
Acrylimirror MRW (double-sided mirror surface hardening)
Half Mirror MRH
Half Mirror MRH RH
Half Mirror MRHC RN

Half Mirror is a transparent acrylic sheet with half metal deposited on it for indoor use with functions of reflection and transmission. There are two types, 10% and 30% transmittance, and other variations such as interference fringe reduction type and nameplate type with excellent appearance.

Asahi Kasei Technoplus
Delamirror 999 (transparent extruded plate)

There is a limit to the plate thickness, which varies depending on the model number, but it can be 2 mm, 3 mm, or 5 mm.
In addition to acrylic, polycarbonate and vinyl chloride are also available as plastic sheets, which will be explained in a separate article.

Conclusion

The acrylic mirror parts manufactured by OM include ATM security mirrors.
Acrylic mirrors are less expensive than glass, but both acrylic and glass have advantages and disadvantages.
